Pednelissos
Pednelissos submitted by SolarMegalith : North Tower in Pednelissos (photo taken on July 2012). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ruins of an ancient Pisidian city located on the plateau of a mountain in Taurus mountains of Antalya Province, Turkey.

The city was enclosed with fortifications, ruins of which survived till nowadays. Most of the fortifications were build in 1st century BC. The agora of the town was build on an artificial terrace and is dated for 2nd century BC. The Roman period brought major changes for the town - the new monumental centre was founded in the lower part of the city, it included large temple and baths.

One of the major structures in Pednelissos is a three-storey market building built in Hellenistic times – its ground floor was occupied by shops, while the second floor was used for storage. In Roman times the second floor was adapted for shops, while on the level of the third floor (the building is located on a steep slope) agora was built. Adjacent to the building (at the north) there are remains of a staircase. In the nearby of the agora there are remains of two churches.

The fortifications of Pednelissos are in good condition. In their northern part there is North Tower with North Gate – on the latter one there is an inscription informing about repairs of the city walls. In western part of the walls there is a Hellenistic gate and a corner tower, while at the SW there is another gate and perfectly preserved sector of the fortifications with a walkway on its top. Just outside the fortifications there is a necropolis and sanctuary of Apollo with preserved relief.

In western part of Pednelissos there are ruins of a temple (possibly never finished) with surrounding temenos. Immediately north of them there is another ruined church.

Around Pednelissos there's a significant number of farmsteads, many of which were fortified.
