2000 year old township remains in Fengcheng, Jiangxi (650 kilometres south west of Shanghai)
The site comprises the recently discovered ruins of a 2,000-year-old city dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty. Located near Fujiacun village, Fengcheng in Jiangxi province, some 650 kilometres to the south west of Shanghai, it covers about 18,000 square metres and is surrounded by a moat.
About 30 metres of the wall surrounding the ancient city was still standing on its west side and pieces of broken tiles have ben recovered from around the site. Villagers have said they had seen stone implements there in the past, but none were found during a field trip by archaeologists in 2010. It is suspected that the implements may have passed into the hands of a private collector.
Archaeologists believe the ruins may provide new clues about the structure of cities from the Eastern Han Dynasty, which ruled the eastern part of the country from 24-220 AD.
