Rock Art in Tanzania.
The Masai say that in the past they used Gong Rock to summon people from over the Serengeti plains. The large stone (over 2 meters long and standing over a meter high) is covered with rounded depressions from the impact of generations of strikes.
The stone lies close to the Moru Kopjes (the Old Kopjes) where pictograms can be found. The sites are frequently included in safari tours that visit this part of the Serengeti. The kopjes are stone outcrops - one of the few features in this part of the plains. Cracks and natural depressions in the kopjes collect rain water and attract birds, mammals, and amphibians. A small grey flecked frog of the area (scientific name - Hyerolius Orkarkarri) was first noticed by science as it sat on the Gong Rock itself. ("Orkarkarr" is the Maa word for "Gong".)
