The Paita Valley petroglyphs are located 25 minutes drive north of Nouméa in New Caledonia. The amazing petroglyphs resemble those seen in Europe but their origins are unconnected. The New Caledonian rock carvings are thought to date to the Naia Oundjo era around 300 AD although there is a possibility that they predate that era. 350 or more petroglyphs have been documented so far in New Caledonia although it is believed that there are hundreds more yet undiscovered. Many are in remote and overgrown areas and are hard to find. There are numbers of them on the eastern coast of the island in addition to the ones featured on this page.
