Earlier this year, it looked as if time were running out for Machu Picchu, the sacred Inca city perched 8,366 feet high in the Peruvian Andes. A group of Japanese scientists warned that the world heritage site, the most renowned archaeological treasure in South America, was shifting over several fault lines and could collapse into the valley below at any moment.
