]]>An Aboriginal rock-art and ceremonial site at the foot of Mt Pilot, in the granite country of north-east Victoria. Its paintings, in red ochre, include a figure widely read as a thylacine, the Tasmanian tiger - a creature that vanished from mainland Australia in the deep past, which is taken to point to the great age of the art. Goanna and snake are also shown; together with the thylacine these were spirit animals of the local clans.

(listing is currently blocked due to the threat from nearby industrial facilities). An area of Aboriginal Rock art under threat from development. The Burrup Peninsula is home to the world's biggest collection of Aboriginal rock art and gained national heritage listing in 2007. The estimated two million carvings on the Burrup Peninsula and in the Dampier Archipelago are considered of global value.

]]>Mulka's Cave is about 18km beyond Wave Rock, near Hyden in Western Australia. A low granite hill has a small cave at its base. The cave isn't large, but look closely at the walls and ceiling you'll see what makes this place special, an assortment of ancient Aboriginal cave paintings.

]]>The Nala Stone Men is a location in the TV thriller The Tourist. Several crude but atmospheric stone sculptures resembling human forms which are glimpsed in photos early on, and which go on to play an important role towards the end of Series 1. The arrangement of their legs looks somewhat like smaller versions of the famous Stonehenge trilithons with extra stones stacked on top to form their bodies. As far as I can ascertain they are purely fictional and were created for the TV show.

]]>The Pinnacles are natural limestone formations in Nambung National Park, Western Australia. This area was important to the semi nomadic Aboriginal tribes because of water. They would come to this place when the seasonal Nambung River made a chain of waterholes through part of the park.
