]]>Lithicality writes: Very pleased to have found this stone after asking permission from the landowner. [As are we to receive the first photo of it - thanks! - MegP Ed] It is located about 10 metres from the gate in the position shown on the map on our page, at the bottom of a wall corner that sticks out into the lane. Hidden by nettles and brambles and only spotted by lynx eyed S. Once cleared a bit the marks are still visible although getting harder to make out in comparison to the 1976 photo by Tom Greeves. (also on our page). We felt convinced these are cup marks as opposed to a buddle stone.

Southdown Ridge Iron Age Settlement

]]>Recorded during excavations in 2008-2009 in advance of construction of the Weymouth Relief Road. Road construction affected only the western edge of the settlement, which may have been very much larger. The settlement was established in the 800-600 BC, the very earliest Iron Age, and appears not to have been enclosed at that time. ]]>A 17th Century gatepost. An information board along the ginnel provides information and illustrations about the site. There are actually two posts - the stones were part of the Cookridge Grange Hall Estate and currently mark the entrance of a ginnel on Cookridge Drive.

]]>Propped stones are described by David Shepherd in 'The Old Stones' book and elsewhere - many have been recorded in Cornwall. Often these are found singly on or near the tops of Granite tors on Bodmin Moor and there are many examples here. They can be difficult to distinguish from naturally eroded features, although some can only be explained by human intervention as the orientation of the stones is clearly different from those beneath and they are propped in place by stones of a different type to the rest of the feature.

]]>We have many photos on our page of this stone standing up but FionaR sadly found it on its side on a recent visit. Apparently it was knocked over by a falling tree in the severe storm in January. It would be good to see this re-erected and the archaeology investigated at some point.. The Long Rock takes some finding, concealed as it is (was?) by a small wood and a blanket of ferns. It is 2.4 meters long with a smooth face that used to lean towards the southeast and tapers slightly at the top.

]]>SAD NEWS - it appears a major cliff collapse overnight 29 August 2026 at Holywell Bay beach has sealed off the beautiful holy well in the cave. . This must be the most unusual location for a holy well. The well is in the cave and only accessible at low tide. Water seeps from the multi-coloured rock and mothers formerly crossed the sands of Holywell Bay to immerse their ailing children in the healing water. Real pagan magic here with no obvious Christianisation.

Overton Down Experimental Earthwork

]]>The experimental earthwork on Overton Down, its bank and ditch cut into the chalk in 1960 so that archaeologists could watch how such a structure weathers and settles. The posts along the crest belong to the monitoring. The point of the exercise was and is to dig sections through it at planned intervals over more than a century, and so measure decay against a known starting point rather than infer it.
