Rock Art in Devon

Information about this cup-marked boulder, the Brisworthy Cup Stone, comes from the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website. Their notes tell us "a large undressed block of granite built into a hedge has been identified as a cup-marked rock. There are 15 discrete cup-marks ranging from 80mm to 40mm in diameter and 25-5mm deep. These other shallow depressions may also be cup-marks".

The PDW web page gives links to further information on Pastscape, Monument Number 619143, which adds that the boulder is located "down a muddy lane at Brisworthy Hamlets (on the east side)". They also mention that "due to the stone having been moved, it is considered to be an artefact and therefore not schedulable."

The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV18859 say that the stone was originally interpreted as a tinner's mortar stone in the early 20th century and dates the stone to the Prehistoric (698000BC to 42 AD). They also record "The fragmentary remains of a tinner's mill were found in 1911 by Worth incorporated into field walls on the eastern side of the northern end of the lane where it opens on the little hamlet of Brisworthy. An unfinished mortar stone of common coarse-grained granite bearing fifteen holes is built into the hedge next to the south gate post of the field. It is 35 inches long and 24 inches broad and has holes varying in diameter from one inch to four inches. The leat which supplied this mill was taken out of Legis Lake and still exists; it has now been extended to supply water to Wigford Down Clay Works."

Thanks for trying, Catrinm. Shame you were unable to find it. All the sources confirm the grid reference recorded here, on the east side of a lane, which, from the aerial photographs, looks like a private lane/track. I note PDW don't have a photograph, either. I assume you've been to the farm and asked permission to search, or ask if they know where it is? On the OS maps, the name of the farm is Moorview Farm. Thanks again for searching; if you try again, hope you have success.
