Discovered in 1827, and again in 1857. It consists of a chamber
shaped like a bean (shown above) with a curved passage leading to it. At the other end of
the passage is a staircase, which is unusual. A second earth house was found nearby in
1982.
Access: In an Industrial Estate just outside Kirkwall. Signposted. The key and a useful torch can be borrowed from the nearby Orkney silversmiths showroom & visitor centre (I can't remember the name of the company!). Quite difficult to climb down into earth house.
Rating: General Impression 3, Ambience 4, Access 2
Personal: Nearby there is an excellent Orkney fish merchants who sell to the public. Flavoured herring, dressed crab and 10kg bags of frozen prawns!
