Re: Desborough Castle by EbonyIvory on Tuesday, 13 August 2024

I grew up on the Castlefield Estate and knew this as Roundabout Wood, with no idea of its ancient history, so this has been a most interesting and informative read. I was born there in 1952 and lived there until 1973 when I left home and moved to West Wycombe. There followed a few years in Loudwater/Kingsmead area then back to West Wycombe. I used to walk my dog through the village and up on the hill by the mausoleum, which hangs seemingly down from heaven like a silver ghost at night, as you drive along the A40. I left in the 1980s and came to Australia to live. I'm now in NSW west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. It's nice to look back at old historical photos of High Wycombe as we age and take more trips down memory lane than actual trips, which aren't always as satisfying, even perhaps a culture shock. I understand the old Castle Pub is now a mosque and that Castlefield isn't the safest or most pleasant place to visit nowadays. Such is the way of the world now. This certainly isn't the Australia I came to 40 years ago. Best wishes and thank you for an interesting site with lovely photographs.
