One of the many branches of the ancient Silk Road led from the Tarim Basin in modern day China to the prosperous Indus Valley and its subsequent Gandharan civilisation in what is now northern Pakistan. This route carried traders, travellers and culture as it traversed the Karakorum Mountains and down through the Hunza Valley. Travellers carved some 30,000 rock art items and petroglyphs, and 5000 inscriptions in some 10 writing systems along 100 kilometres of this part of the Silk Road.
