]]>A colour slide from the 1970s by renowned Irish writer Anthony Weir. This wedge tomb in Co. Mayo is 9.6 km south of Louisburgh. This well-preserved sepulchre is in a very beautiful location by the roadside northeast of Lough Nahaltora (Altar Lake). A single large roofstone covers most of the main chamber of the gallery, which is 4.2 metres long. Double-walling, a fine large septal slab, and traces of the cairn survive.

]]>On the Atlantic cliffs of north Mayo, a few kilometres west of the famous Ceide Fields, Belderrig has produced quartz tools spanning the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic, c. 4500 cal BCE - evidence of communities on the cusp of adopting farming while still living by hunting and gathering. The exposed cliff-edge stratigraphy preserves an unusually detailed environmental record of the transition.

]]>This little circle lies on a lower slope of Barnacuille surveying Broad Haven and the cliffs of Rinroe on the promontory of Benwee Head, Co. Mayo. There are six stones left: five are 1.4 metres high and pointed, while the sixth is a taller, rectangular outlier. 200 metres west are the indefinite remains of a court-tomb.

]]>Ogham Stone in Co. Mayo, Standing all alone in a neglected field. There are two different theories as to what is wrote on the stone. The first one comes from a story commonly told by the local people that it reads ”Mac Bric”. It is thought Mac Bric may have been a local chieftain at the time and the stone was erected in his honour, or it may have been a grave headstone.

Keel East court tomb

]]>This court tomb sits on the lower slopes of Slievemore, Co. Mayo. It offers an amazing view south of the cliffs of Minaun and the Atlantic churning beneath. The tomb itself is aligned North-South, drawing the eye to the distant cliffs. looking north, the court opens to face the peak of Slievemore. A signposted path leads up to the tomb from the road. The tomb's court and rear chamber are fairly intact. Collapse and robbing of material have made it difficult to determine whether there were originally two or maybe three chambers. The roof stone of the rear chamber is impressively large and very flat on top. A possible lintel stone to the passage lies in the court where the entrance would have been.

]]>The County Mayo coastline houses a small archipelago of deserted islands that truly capture the ultimate off-the-beaten-track experience here on the western seaboard. The original settlers encamped on Inishkea North Island about 4500-years-ago and there are many visible prehistoric sites scattered throughout the island. The early Christian monks arrived sometime around the 6th century and this particular island contains some of the best preserved cross slabs and other monastic sites and settlements from this period.
