High enough to stand in with a main chamber and smaller space one end of which has a large horizontal stone inscribed with (most of) a circle centred with a round hole (photo on our page) with rays from the circumference on one side and a triangle on the other - sun, (shooting) star, animal?

The dolmen was lost, but we found it again in 2021 after reading the reports written by them. It's the 12th dolmen in Port de la Selve, one of the very large number of megalithic sites in our area. In fact, it's a "paradolmen" - in the 18th or 19th Centuries, a peasant built a hut around it made with local stones as a dry stone wall.

Dolmen del Mas de la Mata

This dolmen, like the others in this Cataluñian valley was very difficult to find, even with an advanced GPS. All paths that were once in the area are overgrown with sharp, thorny bushes and are easily lost amongst boulders, trees, drops and slopes. It was a very difficult and sunny descent. Still, the dolmens are pleasing, and bold, red on white signs can be seen on arrival. This is useful as the bushes seem rampant. There are pairs of stacked stones left by someone who occasionally visits some of these sites. Expect a difficult scrabble if you visit, bring water and tell someone where you are heading. it is real ankle breaking terrain.

There are four types of burial mounds - see the photo captions. As the name suggests they cremated their dead with personal belongings and put the ashes in urns. The site is well documented in 3 languages, Spanish French and English and used by people who lived in the area of the IIberian Age who had some livestock and crops. It is situated on a high hilltop overlooking the valley.

They called it Emporion (=market). When this became too small they also settled on the mainland and called this Neapolis (= New Town). At the beginning of the 2nd Punic War (218 BCE) the Romans landed here and established a military camp, which later developed into the Roman town of Empuriae. The site has been excavated since 1908 and hosts a museum.
