]]>Situated on the Lythe Fell Road between Slaidburn (9.8 kms) and Bentham Great Stone of Fourstones (6.4kms). A "cross" supposedly used to stand on the site, but this is debated, some believing it to be a "Plague Stone".

]]>The well measures 1.1m high and 1.8m long. It has a cupboard-like cavity of stonework and is reputed to have been the sole water supply when Burnley was a village clustering about the parish church, when it was known as St. Peter's hamlet. ]]>Some mysterious markings on millstone grit boulders discovered by John H Abrahams. See also here and here. Rock art or natural, what do you think?. Located at the bottom of Clegg Moor in Lancashire is a scattering of rocks, I found three stones with peck marks, there is no indication of quarrying. Similar markings can be found on other rock scatters on the top of Clegg Moor.

]]>According to the Milestone Society this is a Roman Milestone and associated wayside cross. The NLS shows "remains of cross" at this location. Located at the junction with the B5272 Ratcliffe Wharfe Lane, opposite Forton Hall Farm, on the grass verge on the east side of the road.

Holden Cross (Haslingden)

]]>Leaning up against the clock tower in Haslingden’s Victoria Park is a huge, square cross base. This is the only surviving remnant of Holden Cross, which was situated to Holden Hall, off the Haslingden Grange Road. Many wayside cross bases are quite small, but this one is huge, measuring 50cm (22 inches high) and just over 1m (38 inches) square.

Halton St Wilfrid's Churchyard

]]>A partly restored decorated pre-Norman high cross constructed of local sandstone and located in the churchyard to the south of St Wilfrid's Church, Halton. The decoration on the shaft is of 11th century date; at the base are scenes from the Sigurd legend, an Anglicized and Christianized version of the story of St George slaying the dragon. At the top of the shaft there are emblems of the four Evangelists, St Matthew, St Mark, St Luke and St John, and below this are parts of four arched panels containing figures, but this part of the cross has been broken and lost. Protected inside the church is the Lancaster Cross, a 10th century Anglo-Saxon/Norse cross-shaft with a missing head but still quite spectacular detail.
