Vindolanda is a Roman fort associated with the defence of Hadrian's Wall; the site (or ‘'castra'‘) is located in Northumberland, England immediately south of the present day Scottish border. The oldest extant writing by a Roman woman was found here. Vindolanda was established in approximately 80 AD, and.extensive ruined remains of many stone fort structures are extant to the present day. To the north of the site Hadrian's Wall looms as a massive green natural rampart, forming an atmospheric visual backdrop to Vindolanda.

]]>Art by Bladup, lots more in our Art section . This circle in Northumberland lies atop a hill surrounded by farmland. One of the stones was re-erected in the 1920s and Burl believes that it is probable that they have all been re-erected at some point. Burl wrote that the direction the stones face in the circle is wrong and that some of them rock under little pressure. They make a fine spectacle standing on the skyline of the hill and it is easy to see why the place was chosen.

]]>Located just to the west of modern-day Corbridge, this site was occupied longer than any other along the line of Hadrian's Wall. Established in the AD80s, occupation continued until AD160. After this date, when the fort was extended, granaries rebuilt, and a town extending to around 12 hectares grew up. The importance of this site springs from its location at the junction of Stangegate and Dere Street, along with construction of a bridge crossing the River Tyne (the river ceases to become tidal at Corbridge).

]]>The Priory holds an important collection of early carved stones. Founded in 654 AD, Holy Island is the cradle of Christianity in Britain. Site of the first Viking raid on Britain when the monastery was destroyed. Nearby Heritage Centre contains an exhibition of the Lindisfarne gospels.

]]>The church guide for St Andrew's Church in Bothal tells us there has been a church on this site for over 1,000 years, the evidence being a number of Anglo Saxon stone fragments which have been incorporated into the present building. The collection of architectural fragments seen in the top photo can be found at the north western end of the church, forming part of the wall of a make-do vestry. Brilliant use of all the different pieces, I loved picking out all the funny faces amongst them!

]]>A wonderful aerial view of the sycamore tree sadly chopped down by an idiot a few days ago. Hadrian's wall is the largest and most impressive monument built by the Romans in Britain. The wall included at least 16 major forts, 81 smaller milecastle forts and about 160 manned turrets; a substantial defensive ditch and rampart aided the military function.

Carrawburgh Roman Fort

]]>The Mystery of Mithraism; The Temple at Carrawburgh Fort, Saturday 16th Sept 2023. The substantial earthwork remains of this Roman fort along Hadrian's Wall, measuring 450ft north-south by 350ft east-west, enclosing some 1.4 hectares. It may have been built as late as 130-132 AD. Located just to the south west of the fort is a fascinating temple to the god Mithras, built by the soldiers around AD 200.

Cawfield Roman Fort

Cawfield Roman Wall and Milecastle 42 can be reached from the car park at Cawfield Quarry. The Milecastles of Hadrian’s Wall can be dated back to 122AD.
