TheCaptain visited on 15th Sep 2005 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 3 From the intriguing and lovely little historic village of Minerve, take the D.147 road to the northwest, passing over the bridge and past the big car parks. The dolmens are signposted from here. The road zig-zags up the hillside for a kilometre or two and then levels out a bit. Continue for three or four kilometres, past the water reservoir, and eventually you will find a dirt track on the left, with a large stone with the word dolmens painted on it. Park somewhere, then follow this track on foot for a couple of hundred metres. The track then splits, take the right track upwards for about three hundred more hundred metres, where to the left of the path the remains of this dolmen are visible. It sits in a mound of loose stone, about 18 metres in diameter, with some raised larger stones, set radially to the chamber, forming a partial circle around it near to the edge. The dolmen is in the centre, with a single capstone sat on top of a large back stone, and several side stones. The chamber is high enough to stand in, and about 4 m long by 2 m wide. Beyond this is an entry passageway, making a total length of about 7 metres, lined with slabs at its sides, and opening to the southeast on 165°. The views from up here, over the plain of the Aude river are spectacular. I would imagine that on a clear day, the Mediterranean sea and the sacred mountain of Canigou are clearly visible.

Dolmen des Lacs 2
Dolmen des Lacs 2 submitted by richardfrance : We found 2 & 3 at Les Lacs but ran out of time to search for the others. (see Les Lacs 2 for more, and www.dolmen.wordpress.com for more photos, archaeologist sketches, etchings from 19th.c. and more text). This site, like so many in lower Languedoc, received a burst of attention in the '70's & '80's from academics on their way up, only to be left languishing. Perhaps funds dried up, perhaps r... I give up. I've been using the Serie Bleu IGN Carte de Randonnee, and trying to work back to the Long + Lat.
I've now ordered a GPS - since my maths has proved useless.
I also failed to register that you had already visited these sites. Do please feel free to go back and edit/replace/reposition my comments.

Is there any way to deal with/separate closely bunched stones? I dread to think what the Bois Bas necropolis will ultimately look like, stacked like planes over Heathrow!

Hi Richard, I am back again after a week or so away. Thanks for all your submissions.

Concerning the Bois Bas site, the way we usually deal with mass places like this here on the megalithic portal, is just to have a single site page with general info on it, until we get details for the individual sites, then we would have seperate pages for each. So, in this case, if you are able to send us details of what you find, we would look to have a Bois Bas overpage, with say Bois Bas 1 to say Bois Bas 12 as seperate pages for each dolmen. With this naming system, all pictures would appear on the overview page, but also the individual components would each have their own write up and pictiures. See for example Ginestous or Drizzlecombe for how this works. Having said that we have no overall Ginestous page. Doh.

The dolmens of Le Causse Grand were first noted by Renouvrier in 1831, and were searched thoroughly. Cazalis de Fondouce in 1879 described six dolmens, and J. Miquel thought there were ten below the farm of Les Lacs, between the chemin du Bouys and the rocks that overhang the Gorge de la Cesse. J. Lauriol, J. Guilaine, Audibert, Doctor Arnal, J. Hinault and P. Lambert have all added their descriptions. Six now are reckoned to exist at Les Lacs, but only two are marked on maps - the others are in danger of disappearing into the garrigue.
The orientation is generally south-west and south. The builders belonged to a nomadic group called Pasteurs des plateaux, the upland herdsmen, who lived in dry-stone huts and wooden dwellings.
Dolmen 2 is a simple 3-stone tomb with capstone 2 m. wide, standing 1.5 m. high. The setting is superb, and seems not to have changed much since an etching of the site was made in 1839. (See http://www.dolmen.wordpress.com for more). It faces S-SW out over the Aude river valley, across to Mont Alaric and Canigou.
It's up the D147 out of Minerve, with parking and a clear track walk of 20 mins. Location 43.220000, 2.420000 .

Welcome to the Megalithic Portal richard, and thanks for your recent contributions.

However, I have been meaning to say for a few days now, that the positional coordinates you provide do not tie up with either the positions I have for these places, or those of the ign.... perhaps you are giving coordinates in some other system than the usual (wgs84?) - there is an outdated French system that even the ign have now given up with...

To check positions obtained, and to read off from a map, the wondeful ign Geoportail can be used. This is directly available for all our french sites by using the little blue aeroplane icon near the top of each sitepage. As you will see this dolmen is positioned as per the ign maps and aerial photographs, and also those of google and flashearth (the other blue aerolane icons).

By the way, I have changed your photographs from dolmen 1 to dolmen 2, and dolmen 2 to dolmen 3, as this is the nomenclature we have here, and this matches to that of Bruno Marc also. I cannot however change the words in your comments here.

To find dolmen 1, see my directions on that site page - it is much nearer to the road than these two dolmens, uphill of the pathway.

      Aye-Aye Cap'n!
I wasn't sure how to get that snarl-up fixed : thanks.
The really big confusion will set in when I return to Bois Bas - there are so many, and in such a tangle of trees . . . but I'll stick with Bruno as best I can.
We tried to see too many that day - when the light goes in January in the middle of the maquis - it gets scary.
