Lesquite Quoit
Lesquite Quoit submitted by mikeaitch : It's difficult to appreciate the sheer size of Lesquite Quoit so the Meg Hunter and I posed for this shot. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Remains of burial chamber at a splendid site in lovely countryside and very peaceful, just around the corner from the wonderful Helman Tor early neolithic causewayed enclosure.

Some measurements from Craig Weatherhill's book Cornovia: "The ruined dolmen consists of a fallen capstone 5.3 by 2.8m and weighing 12.5 tonnes, leaning against an upright 1.9m tall. A second upright at right angles to the first is 1.7m high and 2.7m long."

To find this amazing site follow the B3268 south from Bodmin. After you have crossed the A30 take the third turning on the right. Follow this road to a sharp right bend and continue 'till you see, on the right, a lane where you can park. On the right hand side of the lane is a field gate, skirt the edge of the field to reach the Quoit.

Notes from my visit 15 Sept 2013.
A horrible soaking wet Sunday afternoon spent at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway, I had a look at the map before driving home afterwards, and there was this quoit I have never seen just a couple of miles away.

Despite looking a bit of a nightmare to find, it was fairly simple, and there was plenty of room to park up the lane to the transmitter just to the west of where it is marked on the map, and even better, is that this is where the entrance to the field is.

The remains consist of two large upright slabs, and a huge topstone resting on the ground at one side, and at the other on top of the southern upright. The plan of the stones seems to make no sense to me as to how it would have originally been. The one thing which I found notable is the large size of the stones. For a Cornish dolmen, the stones here are huge, the leaning capstone being more than 5 metres in length, and nearly 3 metres in width.

It is positioned in a rather strange place on a slight slope in the lowlands, with not far away to the south is the significant hilltop of Helman Tor.
