Standing Stone in East Lothian

This stone is recorded as Canmore ID 356169 (Traprain Law Maiden Stone).

Canmore's most recent entry is dated May 2018 and reads: "The Maiden Stone is a block of phonolite, split from the exposed bedrock to its NE leaving a narrow gap in between. The rock, which bears graffiti on its NE face, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Haddingtonshire Sheet 10, 1855) and the OS surveyors noted that ‘A traditional story is told and believed by the country people that no woman except the[y] be a virgin can pass between these rocks...".

[added. thanks, Andy. Hopefully I've given it the correct attribution; if not let me know. AT] Geograph have a photo of it here
https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/474769
It is a Creative Commons photo so could be added to our page.

"The Maiden Stone is simply a large rock that has split away from the adjacent outcrop to form a narrow, vertical gap. It is on the top of Traprain Law, the site of a Iron Age hill fort and settlement.

The folklore attached to the stone is that if you walk, or squeeze naked, through the gap between the Maiden Stone and the Mother Rock, your fertility will improve and you will receive good fortune."

Nicely spotted, Anonymous! Thanks for correcting this. Thanks to your comment, I've also been able to track down the Canmore entry for this stone, updated the grid reference and added a few more details. Again, thank you very much.
