The tallest menhir in the departement of Maine-et-Loire, this stone is renowned for its magnificent zig-zag carvings which can be seen on its northern face.

In his "Inventaire des monuments mégalithiques du Maine-et-Loire" published in 1967, Doctor Michel Gruet wrote this about la Grande Pierre Levée de la Bretelliére;

"Très beau menhir fusiforme régulier de 6,20 m. Le plus grand du département. Sa base semble à peine enterrée. La section à la base est une circonférence aplatie à l'est. Périmètre 7, 70 m. La roche est le granite dit des Aubiers que l'on trouve en place à 600 m au nord. classé monument historique en 1941""
