Cranshaw Thorn Hill 01
Cranshaw Thorn Hill 01 submitted by Rich32 : Carving referenced 'Cranshaw Thorn Hill 01' on ERA and 267 in 'Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding' Image captured 19 August 2009. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Yorkshire (West)

This rock art panel has a cup with two rings, one cup with one ring, and possibly the edge of a hewn-off ring. The central cup with two rings appears to have a short groove extending out of it. The rock itself is of unusual shape, appearing as a triangular block sitting on a smaller triangular block. For more information see England's Rock Art entry for ERA-2551 Cranshaw Thorn Hill 01, which includes a description, photographs, a plan of the stone and its motifs, plus photogrammetry. ERA notes there may be additional modern graffiti plus other motifs which are now too weathered to make out.

This panel is also recorded as one of four Bronze Age cup and ring marks stone and associated prehistoric enclosure - see Pastscape Monument No. 1031136 which says: " Carved rock on Cranshaw Thorn Hill above Ilkley Crags, 560m W of Gill Head Reservoir. Scheduled RSM No 25381. A carved gritstone rock measuring 0.9m x 0.8m x 0.8m. The carving consists of a large cup with two vestigal rings, a second cup with a vestigal ring, and a third ring almost hewn off on one corner."

This rock art panel is located on Open Access land.
