LiveAndrew visited on 25th Mar 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Yet another visit. Walked directly from my front door in the middle of Redruth, to St Euny's Well, up to the North slope of the Carn. Worked my way up to Carn Brea Well and after a brief visit to the west summit and the Basset monument I spent most of my time on the East summit and the remains of the rampart on the Southern slope. Unfortunately, my camera somehow changed settings and the subsequent photos were a little over-exposed.

ClementW visited on 28th Aug 2020 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 4 I recommend this site based on the huge array of large stones scattered about the site, and the expansive views over the northern coast of Cornwall. I accessed this on foot from central Redruth via Carn Brea village (around 25 minutes) and a steep climb is involved; next time I plan to access it from the other side of the hill at Carnkie. The hillside is rich in vegetation and feels a peaceful, reflective place to be.

Carn Brea Enclosure
Carn Brea Enclosure submitted by Bladup : Outcrops at the very West end of the Fort and used in it's prehistoric defences, On the right you can see one of the stones built into the forts bank, Which is heading towards this outcrop (Vote or comment on this photo)
Carn Brea is the best known of the tor enclosures and the one that has been subject to the largest campaign of investigation. The enclosure is built around the central and eastern summits of the 210m tall hill, and consists of up to seven circuits of orthostatic walling. Large amounts of Early Neolithic material culture, including ceramics, flint tools and axe heads, have been retrieved.

A small number of radiocarbon dates were taken from block wood in one area, yielding dates of 3900-3650 (BM 825), 3600-3350 (BM 824), and 3530-3310 (BM 823) cal BC (Mercer 1981, 63).

The majority of the finds came from the upper, eastern summit enclosure which seems to have been the centre of occupation attention. At one excavation site the array of post and stake holes suggest the outline of a small timber building. In the centre of the hill’s saddle are a number of later prehistoric round house bases. Much of the site has been damaged by mining, quarrying and the building of a monument and a castle. The site is also being overrun by dense vegetation.

Carn Brea Enclosure
Carn Brea Enclosure submitted by cromagnonman : The "arched" slab in the foreground is a natural erosion caused when the whole slab layed flat on top of the formation seen behind where it now lays. Wind, rain and loose grit over many centuries carved a natural bowl in the flat top of the rock. The bowl grew over time until it bored through, basically making the rock into the shape of a giant stone polo mint until one day it's own weight broke i... (Vote or comment on this photo)

I have several pieces of flint that I have picked up whilst walking on Carn Brea. . . The accepted theory is that a battle occurred on the site, but some flints still have an eroded matt face which suggests they are flakes chipped from a flint pebble.
This would make it more likely that the flint is evidence of a manufacturing centre rather than a battlefield

I have lived in blowing house Redruth my whole life and have spent many years walking the Carn. But 1 thing I would love to know is how deep is the quarry as I call it. Could anyone shed any light on this. X

Hi, Just to avoid confusion, Chapel Carn Brea is a different hill to Carn Brea between Camborne and Redruth. Chapel Carn Brea is in Penwith near St Just.

a summit unbelievable that needs to be preserved for future generations. - as a Redruth child I ran here and found the old well - Today, the site must be preserved ! God _ and maybe the Corinish authorities - must help us.
