Twlc y Filiast
Twlc y Filiast submitted by PaulM : Another view of the Chambered Tomb of Twlc y Filiast. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This atmospheric and eerie site (similar to Gwal y Filiast) is located on the banks of a small stream (which has eaten in to the monument's mound over the millenia) on private land. It can be viewed from a brdge over the stream (on a public footpath).

The site has no view of the sea and is unusual in the that respect compared to other similar monments in the area.

Three small uprights and a toppled capstone remain.

Note: This is located on private land but can be viewed from the bridge over the stream.

Twlc y Filiast submitted by Horatio : The tomb on approach with the stream on the right. Easy access to this site from the recycling site on the edge of Llanganog. Head down the path bearing right as you pass the recycling site and follow the stream (a few paces) to the footbridge. The small gate just over the bridge was not chained up and luckily for me only tied up with rope. The tomb is visible from this small bridge but possi... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Twlc y Filiast submitted by sem : This translates as "The pigsty of the greyhound". Many chambered tombs in Wales have names that refer to greyhounds or kennels. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Twlc y Filiast
Twlc y Filiast submitted by enkidu41 : SN 3383 1608 The tomb consists of a small rectangular chamber of 3 uprights, 2 of which support a displaced capstone. It stands in private property next to a stream and is fast disappearing under the encroaching plant life. Viewing from the public footpath nearby is becoming increasingly difficult.

Twlc y Filiast
Twlc y Filiast submitted by Postman : A most atmospheric place, a horse helped me to find this site, I asked it if it knew where the dolmen was, it nodded into the trees, I looked, and there it was.

Twlc y Filiast
Twlc y Filiast submitted by Postman : It was bigger than I was expecting.

Twlc y Filiast
Twlc y Filiast submitted by Horatio : Twlc-y-Filiast is within the remains of a long cairn with several of these stones scattered about. The stream can be seen on the left of the photo, which makes the opening to the chamber not actually facing the stream unlike several other chambers in the area. This was excavated in 1953 by Hubert Newman Savory who it sees didn't that find much

Twlc y Filiast submitted by TheDuke : Twlc Y Filiast. An easily accessible gem! Much the same a Gwal Y Filiast, same ambience. Park at the small recycling centre in Llanganog and then follow the track to the bridge with the little chained gate. The cromlech is on private land but just be respectful. A beautiful site especially with the sound of the stream. Enjoy.

An excavation carried out in 1953 by Hubert Savory discovered the remnants of an elongated mound (18m by 9m), a possible ante-chamber and a series of ritual pits. The excavation yielded very few artefacts. However, a small flint scraper, a small pendant and few fragments of unidentifiable pottery were recovered close by, the pendant and scraper from cairn material immediately outside the chamber area. The pendant is thought to represent a metal axe. Taken from Neolithic Sites of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire & Pembrokeshire (Children & Nash - Logaston Press 1997).

I dont think this monument was ever finished. The capstone does not look like it has fallen off the uprights. If it has fallen off then it was lifted first. The uprights would be folded under the capstone otherwise. I believe this to be a very special example of a half built chambered tomb. ( or folly ) The capstone is resting on a couple of smaller rocks with a few others positioned so that the capstone can be levered upward inch by inch agaisnt the uprights with wooden blocks or poles inserted after each lift until it was level and ready to be shifted in to place.
This is my engineering view.
