Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Namur

The stone is preserved in the quietness of the "Chapelle de Saint-Mort" ("Saint-Mort's Chapel")
Mort is an hermit mortally wounded by robbers in 613. He was found dead lying against a stone, which soon became a place of pilgrimage.
The present chapel was built in 1621 ; the tip of the stone emerges from under the altar.

The recent (2007) retrieval of the "Pierre du Diable" (1,4 km South, see separate entry), now within the village, drew more attention of the "Coussin de Saint-Mort" and its chapel, built further away, in the fields on the heights of the village.

Note : this stone is filed as "Early Christian Sculptured Stone" because it was a place of Christian pilgrimage ; the stone is slick.
