The barrow cemetery or necropolis of Monte Areo, in the council of Carreño is situated in the SE of Cape Torres, near the city of Gijón. It is the largest barrow cemetery in the north of Spain. It is said to contain 30 tumuli spread around the area called “Los Llanos,” a plateau overlooking the industrial area of Veriña and Tremañes. Some of the tumuli have been plundered by treasure hunters.
These tumuli were built five thousand years ago. The university of Oviedo, the town councils of Carreño and Gijón started some arqueological studies in the area in the ninetees.
It was difficult to find them as they are very badly signposted, but you can get there by car. I followed the route marked with the symbol of the “coquille” as the area was also know for having an alternative route to Saint James of Compostela, but I did not have time to find the dolmen identified as “Monte Areo XV.” The area I visited is called “San Pablo.”
I took the motorway from Oviedo to Gijón and then I followed the signs to Candás and then the CE-6 to Guimarán. I then took one of the narrow roads from Guimarán to the top of the hill and then followed the signs indicated on the side of the roads with a coquille, a red and a white mark, at times a yellow arrow.
