High up in a valley called Ersdal with a magnificent view over the long and narrow lake Sirdalsvatnet is a very interesting stone monument. It is similar to the stone altar at Rossland.
The stone sculpture consists of a large square-shaped boulder with a large flat surface. Piles of stones in each of the four corners are holding up the big stone block. One single cup mark has been carved into the large surface. Another boulder shaped like a trough is positioned just beneath the altar, very similar to the altar at Rossland.
Some years ago the altar was located inside a large barrow cemetery with smaller round barrows at the small flat field just to the south. The altar also had a stone wall built around it. The wall and most of the barrows have sadly been lost in later years.
From several other locations all around this part of Vest-Agder and Rogaland we know of other pagan altars and "holy" stones. The altar at Rossland is the most well-known, but it is not the only altar in the region.
Close to some farm buildings is a large boulder with a large cup-mark on one of the sides, and a phallic shaped stone is also known to have been found years ago, but this stone has been lost. The site is located on top of a small hill with a very nice view over the valley below. Some grasses are growing around the altar.
