Ballintaggart Nine Stones
Ballintaggart Nine Stones submitted by Sunny100 : Illustration of one of the nine recumbant Ogham inscribed stones at the monastic burial site of Ballintaggart, near Doonsheane, Co. Kerry. The stone is cigar-shaped and smooth and has Ogham notches at the edge and a curious incised cross - both reminiscent of the 5th century CE. All the stones form a circle with one centrally placed. Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Co. Kerry

Ballintaggart Early Christian Site is located SE of the village itself - just off a country lane N of Anascaul and close to the village of Doonsheane. On a small hillock in a circular enclosure or ancient burial ground, lie nine recumbant cigar-shaped stones (smooth with no edges), eight of which form a circle, whilst the ninth is in the middle. They are inscribed with crosses and Ogham notches or lettering, reminiscent of the early Christian period of the 5th century CE.

Three of the stones have incised crosses and most have Ogham inscriptions. One stone recalls TRIA MAQA MAILAGNI or 'the three sons of Malagnos', while on its reverse side CURCITTA. And on this stone a triple-ended incised cross. A second stone recalls CUNUMACCQQI AVI CORBRI or 'Conmac grandson of Coirpre'. A third stone has NETTA LAMINACCA KOI MAQQI MUCOI DOVINIAS or 'the nephew of Laminacca, son of the people of Dovinia'. This Dovinia may be the pagan goddess of the tribe Corcu Duibne of the Corcaguiny Peninsula. The stone also has a cross with expaned ends. Another stone (no 4) has a similar inscription in memory of MAQQI IARI KOI MAQQI MUCCOI DOVVINIAS recalling the same goddess. There is also a stone recalling someone called SAVL or SAUL, grandson of DOCHAR.

The remaining four stones appear not to have any inscriptions or early Christian decoration. Without doubt, this is an interesting site, especially for someone interested in Ogham lettering - the ancient Irish script.

According to Anthony Weir (Gazetteer of Irish Prehistoric Monuments) a tenth Ogham inscribed stone "lies hidden and unnoticed at the Ballintaggart monastic site". He says that "originally there were eleven stones here".
