Anne T visited on 17th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Kilmartin Churchyard: Having booked ourselves in for an evening meal at the Kilmartin Arms opposite the church (warning: the portions were huge, but really good), we went across to the churchyard to find the cross slabs in the churchyard that Rachel Butter mentions in her "Kilmartin" book (page 99) and found so much more. This really finished the evening off nicely. There is also a lapidarium and the Poltalloch Enclosure with some really nice carved grave slabs. There is a small car park immediately outside the church, and there is disabled access into the church with its crosses inside. The churchyard itself was a little tricky to negotiate, as we had to step over old chest tombs to see some of the carved slabs. Nice views down to the glen below, and a peaceful place to spend time.

Kilmartin Churchyard
Kilmartin Churchyard submitted by Ghriogair : Kilmartin Churchyard (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sculptured Stone in Argyll. Kilmartin Church has three early Christian crosses displayed inside. The churchyard has a variety of carved stones installed in it.

The stones have been collected from the local area and vary in date and form. There is a special shelter (a lapidarium) built for those stones deemed to be at risk from the weather and there is also plenty to see in the Churchyard itself. Within the church, and the churchyard, there are early Christian crosses and cross bases. Another small enclosure in the south western part of the churchyard houses the Poltalloch grave slabs.

For more information on the early crosses see Canmore ID 319840 and the RCAHMS publication "Argyll Volume 7: Mid Argyll & Cowal Medieval and Later Monuments" which is available for download free from the Canmore Archives/Digital Publications section.

Please note: whilst this page captures all the entries for Kilmartin Church and Churchyard, there are separate pages for Kilmartin Church (Lapidarium) and Kilmartin Church (Poltalloch Enclosure) for anyone particularly interested in the stones in those sections only (see nearby sites below).

Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure)
Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure) submitted by Anne T : This large rectangular slab in the Poltalloch Enclosure is thought to originate from a table tomb. Above the coat of arms there is an inscription commemorating Mr. Archibald Malcolm who was minister of Kilmichael Glassary Parish Church, who died in 1685 aged 80.

Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure)
Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure) submitted by Anne T : This broken slab of quartzite schist shows damage along its left hand edge (note: this panel is displayed 'upside down' in comparison to the other panels'). The surface is divided into three rudely carved panels with the name POLTALLOCH incised in a recessed panel. Dates to the late medieval period, and is described as 'a crude local product'.

Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure)
Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure) submitted by Anne T : This tapered slab, measuring 1.82m by 0.49m has been reconstructed from several fragments. It has a sword flanked by two animals whose tails produce plant stems. At the foot of the slab are a casket, shears and what is thought to be a comb. It also has the word POLTALLOCH inscribed at the top. Loch Awe School. Dates to the 14th to 15th century.

Kilmartin Churchyard (Poltalloch Enclosure) submitted by Anne T : This tapered slab in the Poltalloch Enclosure measures 1.85m by 0.57m and has part of the top moulding cut away for a 19th century inscription which reads POLTALLOCH. At the top, it bears a 0.41m high figure in a niche crowned by dragon's head finials. The entwined stems of the plant stems on the lower half merge into the tail and limbs of two opposed animals.
