Carreg Samson, Abercastle
Carreg Samson, Abercastle submitted by stonetramp : First Prize in Category A This stunning cromlech is right on the Pembrokeshire coast, not far from Fishguard. It sits in a coastal sheep meadow, accessable over the cattle grid off the farm driveway. The ambience is magnificent as you can see. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Now that Spring is here, it’s time to get out there with your camera and capture its fleeting beauty. Like last year, the Spring Photographic Competition has two categories:
* A * Best photo with a Megalithic or Prehistoric subject
* B * Best photo with an Historic or Landscape subject

The first prize for each category is a ticket for the Megalithomania Weekend in May, worth £80 each.

See our page here for this year's dates, venue and programme for Megalithomania.

This photo competition is now closed but please
continue leaving comments and voting just for fun. You can score each photo from 1 to 10 out of 10, but only once for each.

Each category has runners up prizes of a £30 and £20 voucher to spend in our online shop. That's a total of £260 worth of prizes!

Closing date: 22nd of April 2007, voting will carry on until the 29th, and the winners will be announced on the 30th of April. Voting starts as soon as photos are up on the site so early birds have a real advantage in getting their photos up to collect more votes.

Rules

· Open to all Registered Members of the Megalithic Portal

· You may enter a maximum of two photographs in each category (four total). Please label your photo with an informative caption and whether it is an entry for Category *A* or *B*.

· Photos do not have to be taken this Spring. They may be from any time of year, not just photos of springtime. You can also select to enter photos that you have already posted on the Portal as long as it has they have not been entered for a previous competition. Contact me to move an existing photo, using the 'Contact Editor' link to the left, or if you have any difficulties entering.

· Photos must be saved as .JPG. Size between 640x480 and 750x500 pixels (or near equivalent), and less than 200kB file size. See our FAQ for more help on this.

· Keep high resolution copies in your files. Publishers are buying more and more from the Portal now and there is potentially money to be made.

· We don’t really like photo editing, cheesy filters or other editing trickery. Simple things like cropping and brightness/gamma adjustment are encouraged but tweaking other parameters will be frowned upon, including upping the colour saturation for dramatic effect - we can spot this! Keep it simple – you can’t improve on nature’s colours.

· You must be the copyright holder. You retain copyright in your photo, but agree for it to be displayed on the Megalithic Portal and to be used in ways connected with the competition.

* You are encouraged to vote for your favourite photographs, but we can spot vote rigging and we reserve the absolute right to disqualify any photos where unusual voting patterns are seen. (Getting all your class or workmates to vote for you counts as vote rigging and will be spotted so please don't try it) The decision of the judges is final in all matters and no correspondence will be entered into.
Good luck!

Submit a photo using our Photo submission form. You will need to register with the site if you are not already a member.

Fill the form out as follows: Category, choose !2007 Spring Photo Competition, which is about 1/3 of the way down the long list. Click on the box and type a Shift 1 (!) to jump straight to it.

In the Site Name box, give your photo a nice title.

Put a Description in the box of the same name, and indicate whether you are entering Category *A* or *B*.

Filename: Browse to the file you have saved from your paint program. This must be less than 200k file size, see our FAQ for more help.

Note: This photo competition is now closed but please continue leaving comments and voting just for fun.

Voting seems to be continuing after the closing date for this competition.

I have noted at least two votes since yesterday which will obviously skew the results.

Has the result been logged yet?

Hi guys - I forgot to say cetegory *A* on my first pic upload - is this ok? It is stonehenge...so fairly obvious which category - but I don't want to take any chances...

Also, being uttelry honest - how do I find out what the grid ref is for Helsinki...? ...lol... Not the best at grid refs, great at map reading, won't need (or want, or use) a sat nav but have never had to use grid refs...sorry!

Whilst I am waffling on - I love this site...

That's your photo updated, thanks for the kind comments.

Helsinki is Finland so your best bet would be to look under Finland in 'Browse by Country/Type'.

Or you can zoom around and find Finland on the big Megalith Map but I'm not sure if that's working at this moment...

But we don't appear to have anything listed in Finland at all. Anything you can find out while over there would be very welcome.

If they are all being added in a queue in the order they come in, how come mine hasn't been added yet but was posted on the 7th before the entries added in the last few days? http://www.megalithic.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=a312&file=index&do=showpic&pid=28655 Would it also not be better to put all entries in a new hidden gallery until the final entry date has passed, how many people say to themselves 'yep, gone and voted' without seeing half the entries?

There are no photo competition entries in the queue at the time of writing this message. When did you add yours?

      Ken,
I've had a look on the server and there is no sign of your pics. Other photos have been coming through fine as you can see. We did get a backlog of photos over Easter as we were all off doing other things. It shouldn't cause loss of photos though - I don't know what's happened to them, sorry. There is no queue at the moment so if you resubmit them we'll add them straight away.
      Thanks,
      Andy

      Andy,
I happened to be looking for the wonderful picture I remembered seeing coming through from Ken on the 'new' page - of Kealkil, as I had expected to see it in the competition (definitely worth a vote!)

Seeing your comment, I have just re-looked - it is on the site, but not on the competition page, which may be causing the confusion?

Yes, Ken's Kealkil photo is in the competititon. It also appears on the site page as it has the name of 'Kealkil', this is deliberate so people can see all our best photos. I was assuming Ken was talking about other photos he had sent as everyone is allowed to enter two photos in each category.

Mystery solved - Captain found Ken's photo and moved it into the gallery from another category that it had got into by accident.

No worries. There are a lot of new 'site pages' coming in to add and link photos to, including your Mexican ones (thanks for these!). We should try and give the competition photos priority in the queue but it's not always possible to change the order from how they come in.

Wrong, they are all being approved in the queue in the order they come in. Moderators pics are queued as well (and they have no part to play in the running of the competition)

Andy, every time I check my pic for the statistics it registers as a hit (I think). Is there any way to stop this as it skews other people's perception as to what is popular ?
More importantly, would it be possible to make every person who votes give a reason for their score in the comments section. This would stop idiots having fun at the expense of the people who have gone to the trouble of taking the pics in the first place.
Cheers
Sem

I've only just added the link to the competition photos to get more people in there. Your visits shouldn't count much in the great scheme of things but hey why not visit your photos and make them look more popular - there's nothing in the rules that says you can't do that...!

Voting score is calculated as Numeric Score x Number of Votes

This means that voting someone a '1' actually slightly increases their score, but this will only affect the photos at the very bottom, no one who gets lots of '1's is going to win.

Re: Megalithic Portal Spring Photo Competition 2007 by Anonymous on Tuesday, 27 March 2007
Andy,

not sure what the voting rules are...are you going to be inviting a vote for people's favourites in each category, or does it involve use of the 1 to 10 scoring method which seems to confuse new members perhaps?

Or is it based on the number of hits, which perhaps indicate which ones people like enough to look at more closely?

Before the flood of entries, perhaps some guidance on the scoring/voting, to supplement the information on submitting entires?
