Grotte du Moulin (Bize-Minervois)
Grotte du Moulin (Bize-Minervois) submitted by richardfrance : Site in Languedoc: Hérault (34) France: This is as far as she is prepared to go: she does not want to disturb the bats [or the bears or the hyenas]. Outside this accommodating residence there is a spring, a sheltered valley, a phallic stone - Peyremale - and a Bronze/Iron Age oppidum. (Vote or comment on this photo)
It was here in 1827 that the 22-year-old chemistry student Paul Tournal of Narbonne found the first-ever fossilized human bones. For this and his championing of science over religion, he should be more widely remembered. The cave is situated in a most benign location, with an abundant spring and fertile valley.

Its occupation dates to Neanderthal man - alternating with bears and hyenas. An endangered bat now occupies the cave: late spring and early autumn are the only times to visit.
