Ancient Cross in Merseyside

Reconstructed from fragments, an Anglo Saxon cross in the churchyard of St Barnabas', Bromborough. Other Saxon stones, and later period, are kept in the parsonage garden, according to the NMR.

This cross is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1343465 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 1111138. Pastscape tells us that in the 9th/10th century, the cross originally stood near this site, and "was incorporated in the fabric of the later stone church building on the site of the present church. It was reassembled after the fragments were found during the demolition of the earlier church in 1863. For many years the fragments were stored in the porch and were only recently restored."

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the St Barnabas Churchyard Cross, Bromborough, Wirral, Cheshire, which includes photographs, direction for finding the church, a description, background information about this ancient church, and a list of reference sources for more information.

My ancestors the Spann family lived in Bromborough from the late fifteenth century and built Stanhope House, which still stands very near St. Barnabas. The last members of the family sold the house about 1900. There are many descendants living in the United States today.

I was born and brought up in Bromborough 75 years ago. Watching the bell ringers practice at St Barnabas Church was a treat. Thank you for the picture of the Saxon Cross. I remember it. The Church organist- Auld Kingy- was my first piano teacher. He was very old then-at least I thought so. He had a very scary Bull dog who would come snuffling into the room where I was partaking of a glass of milk and a biscuit. Margaret

I am informed thus! "Dear Tim,
Enjoyed your website posting about the St.Barnabas cross. I think though the cross is hiberno-norse (ring headed) and not anglo-saxon (wheel headed, where the arms of the cross protrude out of the wheel). See JD Bu'lock "Pre Norman crosses of West Cheshire and the Norse settlements around the Irish sea" Trans. Lancashire & Cheshire Antiquarian Soc 68 (1958), 1-11."

Just shows you can't believe everything you read in the HER!

Called in yesterday - the churchyard reconstruction is obvious, but a call in on the vicarage yielded nothing. The Vicar has been there about 18 months, and was helpful and pleasant, though knew nothing of the stones. Speaking with some parishioners in the churchyard, they also exclaimed surprise at the historic record's revelation.

Saxon cross fragments also recorded at Heswall and Hoylake, though exact whereabouts, and if viewable are not clear.
