Petrified wood was used by prehistoric peoples to make tools. But, here, in one spectacular instance, an entire house has been built with bricks of petrified wood. Agate House is re-built, stabilized remnant of pueblo style village homes built here.

The site is part of the Petrified Forest National Park, in Navajo County, Arizona.

The colours which are visible in these ancient trees, turned into agate are incredible, the variation and vividness sadly lacking in these faded photos from 1990, taken in the baking midday Arizona sun.
