Ancient Village or Settlement in Graubünden

1938 - 1951 the forest engineer W. Burkhardt explored the distinctive settlement plateau of the Petrus Hill of Cazis and discovered the remains of Neolithic settlements. Because of the thick-walled ceramic finds, he assigned this station to the Horgener culture.

In addition to ceramic remains, numerous bone and antler artifacts were found on Petrushügel, but also several stone axe blades made of serpentinite, a large number of saw plates, various flint and radiolarite instruments, such as arrowheads and blade tools, as well as rock crystal.

Excavations carried out by the University of Zurich under the direction of Prof. Dr. M. Primas in 1981 and 1982 revealed that the settlement site of Cazis-Petrushügel was probably used seasonally for hunting, cattle grazing, antler processing and serpentinite processing in the later 4th and 3rd centuries BC. In addition to Neolithic settlement remains, sporadic Bronze Age and Late Medieval remains were found on Petrushügel.

This is a slightly abbreviated translation of the information board of the municipality of Cazis and the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Graubünden.

Nearest Public Transport Stop is “Cazis Abzweigung Klinik Beverin”. From the country road you can reach the site in 30 minutes on foot, on a safe wide forest path. There is also a shorter, steep path through the forest. Parking should be possible in the vicinity of the Public Transport Stop.

The settlement site of Cazis-Petrus Hill was used seasonally in the later 4th and 3rd millenniums BC (not centuries BC). Please excuse my translation error.
