Gundestrup Mark Jættestue 2
Gundestrup Mark Jættestue 2 submitted by Martin_L : As the chamber was deeply embedded into the remains of the barrow and also partly overgrown in 1990 I made a simple sketch to show sites groundplan. S = Side chambers, P = Passages, C = Main chamber(s) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Unusual passage grave with two passages and two side chambers near Aalborg in North Jutland (Nordjylland)

The ground plan of this funnel-beaker tomb is extremly rare (in Denmark). I am not sure if there really is another one of this type. Unfortunately the site is partly damaged and was rather overgrown in 1990.

Two approximately 6m long passages (nowadays hardly visible) lead into a 12m long chamber, covered by at least 10 capstones. Most probably this main chamber was divided into two similar sized parts. Otherwise it would not have been necessary to built two separate passages. The chamber is deeply embedded into remains of the eroded barrow and completely filled with earth. Only the capstones are easily visible. Aligned with both passages there are two side chambers at the opposite side of the main chamber. While the southern one seems to share 2 (?) orthostats with the adjacent main chamber part, the northern one is separated from the other main chamber part by a 2m passage. All these details were hardly visible in 1990.

There are a large (bronze age) barrow and another unusual and very well preserved passage grave nearby (Gundestrup Southern passage grave) [Date of visit: April 1990]
