Ancient settlement in China
Ancient oasis settlement on the southern branch of the Silk Road, in the southern Taklamakan Desert of Xinjiang. Originally an independent kingdom, it was later conquered by various neighbours, in turn.
Mark Aurel Stein excavated parts of the town in 1900, and documented many buildings. In 1994, modern Chinese excavations began.
Some of Stein's finds are in the Stein Collection at the British Museum, others are in Delhi.
The lat-long references are from "List of Archaeological Sites of the Taklamakan and Lop Desert", on Wikipedia.
