The Neolithic settlement in Schöneck-Kilianstädten (Hesse/Germany) came into the focus of international attention when a mass grave of the Linear Pottery culture (LBK) was discovered. The recent publication in PNAS contributes important insights to the investigation of violence during the LBK period and presenst new data in addition to the well known mass grave or massacre sites in Talheim, Asparn/Schletz or Herxheim.

At least 26 individuals, which were violently killed by blunt force and arrow injuries, were discovered in a mass grave. The intentional and systematic breaking of the lower limbs was discovered as a violence-related pattern by the researchers. The abundance of the identified perimortem fractures indicated torture and/or mutilation of the victims. In conjunction with previous results, these findings support the assumption that massacres of entire communities were not isolated occurrences but rather frequent incidents of the last phase of the LBK.
