This atonement stone has a picture of the murder scene and this text: "He who lies here was named Rode Marten Frens, and he who killed him was Johs. Offen Frens. He turned 25 years old." (my translation)
The habit of setting atonement stones was widespread in Europe in the late Middle Ages. The erection of an atonement stone was part of the atonement agreement between two hostile parties who in this way evaded a feud. Erected at the crime scene, the stone preserves the memory of an outrageous murder for many generations, and throughout his life, the perpetrator was publicly confronted with his crime.
Four atonement stones have been preserved in Dithmarschen. In addition to this stone from 1567 called the Frens-Stein, there is the Swyn-Stele in Lunden, the Pferdekrug Suehnestein, and the Klaas-Stein in Schalkholz.
