Hillfort in Hesse
A big hillfort with 3 rings of earth walls of a total length of more then 10 kilometers. Abandoned in the middle of the first century BCE.
This is the dominant hill overlooking the fertile lowlands at the knee of river Lahn (celt. Laugana - muddy water) near Giessen. Between the outer and the middle ring of fortification was probably a place for the people in the surroundings where they could flee to in case of an enemy attack.
Between the middle and the inner ring there are at last two village like settlements which werde burned down in the middle of the 1. century BCE.
Within the inner ring, a big telecommunication tower was built - during the building time there were found some remanents of the Beaker people. Almost all of the area in the inner ring is destroyed by building the tower, building a small hut for wanderers and forestation.
Some excavations there took place in early 20th century and then from july 1999 till today. Every summer there is an excavation campaign, lasting from three months in the beginning to 3-4 weeks this year.
Findings from there are on display in the nearby museum "Keltenkeller" in Biebertal
