Rock Art in Telemark

This rock art site is one of the most interesting locations of any rock art site I have visited maybe next to the Bruteigsteinen in Hordaland. The rock art site is located on a small rocky outcrop reaching out in the Totak lake and the rock carvings are at the water's edge, sometimes being washed over by the fresh water of the lake! The site has been equipped with a information poster and a small path leads out on the outcrop. The rock art site is also the largest rock art site in the inner regions of east Norway.

The rock art site is very unique since it has both of the two types of carvings, "hunting and gathering" carvings and "agricultural" carvings, suggesting the rock art are from both time periods of Stone Age (5000 to 2000AD) and Bronze Age (1800 to 500AD). The Stone Age carvings have pictures of elks and the bronze age carvings are mostly ships and foot soles.

The rock art panel has the carvings of a total of 60 figures. Three elks are carved close together in the center of the site and just next to the elks are some rectangular squares with cross lines suggesting they picture pit hunting that was common in ancient times where a pit would be dug and the top covered with branches and the animal would fall down into the pit. Not an uncommon picture from stone age rock art sites.

The most common picture on this site are foot soles. All in all there are five pairs of foot soles and 11 single soles. The soles vary in size from 20cm in length to around 30-40cm. In the centre of the site is a large boat carving with 16 vertical "crew lines", a very common bronze age picture. The boat is around 40cm in length. Close to the boat are two carvings of what looks like people and also a lot of unidentifiable pictures. There are also a few circle figures.

Wonderful photos. Great site indeed. Thanks for submitting recent photos.
Just a remark: The information panel at the site does not show the whole carving area. For example the area with the fourth elk is not included (This is the elk being visible on some of your photos).
Did you also took photos of the famous central area with the carvings of the 3 elk and the traps/fences?

Hello Martin! well, the information panel doesnt extend to show the whole area, it seems to me it has cut off the part to the left of the site since the elk was in the left side. The carvings in the centre with the elks and the traps are sadly almost not possible to see, that part of the rock looks more weather worn than the rest of the panel, it was very difficult to get a photo of that part and also the footprints in the top corner of the drawing of the information sign are also very difficult to see. This is probably also because they are so close to the lake and high waves or ice forming in winter have town and grinded parts of the rock.

Ok, i see. On the last photos i have seen, the area with the 3 elks has been heavily affected by lichen growth, but otherwise well preserved -> Photo . Hopefully it is not severely damaged now.
