Ancient temple site and Nuragic village in Sardegna

Additional information submitted by Drew Parsons October 2010: This valley has an interesting history. Antas was first setttled by Nuragic people and the site is thought to have been a sacred area from those times. It was adopted by the Carthaginians in the 4th century BC. Rich deposits of lead and iron were discovered in the area which attracted Roman interest. The Roman Temple which remains today was dedicated to the god Sardus Pater Babai. There is a Nuragic village nearby, a Roman Road and quarry and nature walkways here too. Although lost there were records of the site from Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. Using this information Bishop Fasa from Sassari explored the area in 1580 trying to locate the temple. In 1838 Lamamora found parts of columns but it was not until 1967 that the exact location and importance of the site was discovered. The 1967-8 excavations uncovered Carthaginian material and the 1984 excavations the Late Bronze Age finds of burnt human and animal bones linking the site to Nuragic culture. The site is well signposted along the S126 twisting hill road from Guspini to Inglesias. There is a car park, ticket and information office and small shop at the site.

Although normally Roman material is not normally included in the main Megalithic Portal pages, this site was already on Megalithic Portal and it does have a Nuragic Bronze Age heritage.
