Runestone in Telemark

These two small standing stones are found on both sides of a local road just next to a small local airport. The runestone is found on the west side of the road, while the small standing stone without runes is on the east side. They are both just a few metres from the road.

There were originally four stones here but two of them have previously been removed. The stones have been used as markers in horse riding competitions, and perhaps also in medieval times.

The runestone is around 70cm in height, around 30cm wide and around 20cm thick. The runic inscription has been interpreted as "Torolv wrote, these runes shall say over the ones who borrow a stirrup". The strange text is believed to be from some old law or rule in ancient horse gaming competitions, since they were used in them up until almost modern times. The stone has a piece of its top missing.

The other small standing stone is around 50cm in height, around 20 cm wide and around 20cm thick. Because of its small size it is easily overlooked.
