Burial Chamber (Dolmen) in Chandrapur District.
Group of four megalithic structures, one guarded with protection walls. Archaeologists date the structures to 3rd and the 2nd century BC, based on material finds and the basic design of the site. The megaliths might have been erected and protected during the Asmaka Janapada or in the Satavahana periods.
One of the four megaliths is intact. The stones are laterite and sandstone. The height of the dolmens' standing stones is about 10 ft, with a covering capstone is 17 by 15 ft (length) in size and estimated weight of 80 tons. The structure has two separate chambers with big rectangular portholes. Reasearcher Kantikumar A Pawar believes these were designed for offering food to the dead as well as for worshipping them.
Findings include glass bangles, a copper bangle, stone Celt and various potsherds.
The second and third megaliths found are much smaller and not intact. Finds yield only a few potsherds, some iron ore and its residue.
The fourth megalith was a single-chambered structure. The cap-stone is missing. The chamber itself is floored by seven dressed laterite blocks, which are placed in the east-west direction.
Researchers from Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute recently unearthed four megalithic burials at the site. The excavation of the burials was carried out under the supervision of Kantikumar A Pawar, assistant professor at the Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune.
Note: The location given is only for the general area of the modern village of Harapur; it is not the location of the dolman group.
Note: Megalithic burial site, also a place of worship, unearthed. See comment.
