The history of Bundi dates back to the early parts of the 12th century. There are many tales of chivalry and honor that are related to Bundi. The city was once the capital of the princely states of Rajasthan.

In early times, the city of Bundi and its surrounding areas was inhabited by some local tribes. Among the various tribes and clans, the Meenas were the most powerful and dominant. The city of Bundi is also believed to derive its name from the name of one of the prominent Meena chieftains, Bunda Meena. The Hada Rajputs are also an integral part of the history of this Rajasthan city. The Hadoti region, which is the main base of Bundi, derived its name from the Hada Rajputs. The Hada Rajputs are actually a branch of the Chauhan clan. They dominated the city from the 12th century and continued doing so for a long period of time. It was in 1193 that Mohammad Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in a fierce battle that raged between them. Some of the nobles of Prithviraj Chauhan fled to the nearby areas in the Chambal Valley. The valley area was inhabited by local tribes and clans and the nobles dominated these tribes and brought the area of Hadoti under their dominance. Later two states were formed - Kota and Bundi - on both sides of the River Chambal. With time, Bundi lost its significance to Kota. During the British rule, Bundi existed as an independent state. After 1947, the city was made a part of the state of Rajasthan. o-ordinates by GPS.

Pre-historic findings in Rajasthan district by Andy B on Friday, 19 February 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Fragments of pre-historic ostrich eggshells estimated to be 25,000 years old and earthen dice belonging to the Kushan period are the latest additions to a treasure trove of archaeological objects discovered in Bundi district of Rajasthan. The findings are set to throw new light on the hoary past of the Hadauti region which is believed to have sustained an ancient civilisation.

Amateur archaeologist Om Prakash Sharma alias Kukki, who has made the spectacular discoveries, was honoured at the Republic Day ceremony of the Directorate of Archaeology at Albert Hall Museum here on January 26.

A barely literate grocer with a passion for artefacts of yore, Kukki has discovered rock paintings belonging to the Mesolilithic-Chalcolithic age and numismatic objects and tools of the Copper Age and the Mauryan and post-Gupta period in the vast hilly tracts of Bundi, Kota and Bhilwara districts over the past two decades.

The unassuming Kukki, who brought the rare findings with him, told The Hindu here that he stumbled upon the ostrich eggshells in the ravines of Nangli river, 35 km from Bundi, three months ago. These eggshells most probably belong to a single egg as they were collected from a small area and are similar in colour, thickness and morphology.

The amateur archaeologist points out that the Asian ostrich or Struthio asiaticus, earlier found in the region between Central Asia and China, had become extinct around the end of the last ice age. The latest finding proves that the ostrich inhabited this part of the country.

The extinct Asian ostrich probably behaved much like the ostrich of today, Struthio camelus, which is now found predominantly in Africa and is the largest living species of bird. The ostrich is also farmed around the world, particularly for its feathers which are decorative and used for feather dusters.

According to Kukki, the radiocarbon dating of the eggshell fragments found by him could help determine their age. The Asian ostrich probably went extinct because of changing climate, shifting habitat and over-exploitation by humans.

The previous findings of ostrich eggshells in Hadauti region are recorded in Baran district in mid-1970s by V. S. Wakankar and at Chandresal village in Kota district in 1980s by another researcher.

Kukki says he discovered about 20 earthen dice from the mounds in Richcha Ki Jhonpriya hamlet, 34 km from Bundi, at the end of the previous monsoon when the soil from the mounds shifted naturally. “The small cubes are tastefully designed with lines, which probably denote the number assigned to each of them,” he says.

The dice, used on the chessboard for the indoor games of chance, belong to the Kushan period of 1st to 3rd Century A.D. Kukki affirmed that if the sand mounds in the region are excavated the traces of an ancient civilisation and human habitation could be found, connecting the missing links in Indian history.

Kukki right now is working on a project sanctioned to him by the State Directorate of Archaeology for documentation of ancient rock paintings in Bundi district, including those in the Gararda region facing the threat of submergence in water stored for a dam. There are about 55 sites in Bundi where the rock art provides a glimpse of flora and fauna of the pre-historic era.
