Barrow Cemetery in Vest-Agder
Heddelandsmonen is a large Iron Age barrow cemetery, it is one of the largest in Vest-Agder. The Heddelandsmoen is a large triangular shaped flat plateau that elevates a little from the surrounding agricultural landscape. The area is inside a enclosure with goats. There is a signpost next to the gate of the enclosure and a small parking lot nearby.
The site consists of 33 barrows, nine of them are elongated barrows and the others round barrows. To the west edge of the plateau is the largest barrow some distance away from the rest of the site. The cemetery is inside a forest but the trees are some distance between and the forest floor is only short vegetation so the barrows are easy to see.
The first three round barrows are to the left when one enters the enclosure. They are oriented on a straight line from south to north. The barrows are similar in size, around 14 metres in diameter and around 1,5 to 2 metres in height. To the right of the gate are two more round barrows, around 18 metres in diameter and around 2,5 to 3 metres in height. They are very close to one another.
The largest round barrow in the main cemetery is around 20 metres in diameter and around 3,5 metres in height. It is in the cnetre of the cemetery. One of the long barrows is very large, around 42 metres in length, around 10 metres wide and around 2,5 metres in height. The other long barrows are from 20-30 metres in length and around 8-9 metres wide. The rest of the round barrows are from 7 to 12 metres in diameter and around 0,5 to 1 metres in height.
The largest round barrow is around 50 metres to the north west. It is located away from the other barrows, on the edge of the plateau. It is 22 metres in diameter and around 4 metres in height. It has its own information sign and the ditch around the edges is very deep and clear.
