During excavation work as part of a construction site at the site called “Les Fougains”, an alignment of 13 menhirs (medium-sized erect stones / medioliths) was found in collaboration with the cantonal office of Archaeology of the Canton of Valais.
Such a discovery is exceptional. Indeed, the last similar recording dates from 1964 in the city of Sion at the “Petit Chasseur.”
The Neolithic period seems to be favoured by scholars, which seems to be consistent with the many other discoveries made in the territory of Saint-Léonard up to that time.
Carbon-14 dating is underway, the on-site survey is almost complete and the stones will soon be transported extra-mural in order to carry out the detailed studies under the best conditions.
As soon as the analysis phase has been completed, discussions will resume in collaboration with the cantonal office for finding a dignified place for this extraordinary discovery in our communal territory.
