The Teufelskanzel is a rock outcrop in Herdecke (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). It is part of the cliffs at Hengstey lake.

The sandstone rock is linked to different versions of the legend of the Teufelskanzel (“Devil`s pulpit“). After the nearby Saxon hillfort Syburg had fallen to the christian Franks, one of the last pagan Saxon soldiers was chased to towards this rock. He jumped with his horse down the cliff. The Franks did not find him and assumed that the pagan gods must have helped him.
Like in the cases of many other sites that later were associated with the devil, it can be speculated, that the Teufelskanzel might have had a special, sacral meaning to the Saxons.
