This small cave in Rhineland-Palatinate is full of carvings, engravings and signs. There are 5 rock-seats in the rock in front of the cave. Inside are two main carvings - rectangular with 12 small cups - you can see in the photo. A very mysterious place. I couldn't find anything about this site anywhere on the web. Does anybody know more about these carvings?

I'd go with the lunar theme, the cups could be marker holes to match the phases. What's the directional orientation?

The rock slab with the main engravings is west-southwest orientated.

if it was me i would probably think of the carvings as less square and more, well, horseshoe shaped. simply because the two seem to be interchangeable a lot of the time. think of stonehenge and the new sites being found around there of that design. how about - quote 'There is good reason to suppose that the crescent form (of the horseshoe) links the symbol to pagan Moon goddesses of ancient Europe such as Artemis and Diana, and that the protection invoked is that of the goddess herself, or, more particularly, of her sacred vulva. As such, the horseshoe is related to other magically protective doorway-goddesses, such as the Irish sheela-na-gig, and to lunar protectresses.' http://www.luckymojo.com/horseshoe.html
so while its talking about more recent symbolism, it may be even be possible that our modern day superstition about horseshoes comes from older symbols like this!
