Sprakeler Heide Huegelgraeberfeld submitted by Martin_L : 5 of the remaining 15 barrows are partly visible on this photo (March 2009). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Iron age barrow cemetery near Sögel in Lower Saxony

Remains of a very large barrow cemetery from late pre-roman iron age (2050-2300 BP). In 1964 only 40 barrows were left. 25 have been destroyed between 1964 and 1979 so only 15 are left nowadays. Same sad story as at many similar sites. In 1952 excavations took place.

Access remark:
The barrows are situated close to a firing range. You can have a view from the small Sögel-Sprakel road or from the path leading to the nearby neolithic tomb, but you must not enter the area of the barrow cemetery. There are several signs promising one will possibly get shot by accident. I was tempted to follow this invitation, but soon realized that I am a real coward. So turned back after a few meters and 20 photos.
