Stedje Runestone
Stedje Runestone submitted by kenntha88 : a closer up picture of the stone (Vote or comment on this photo)
Close by the church of Stedje and overlooking the town of Sogndal is a runestone. The stone measures 1.89 metres in height and is about 40cm wide. The runes are going from top to bottom on one of the flat sides running along the edge.

The runic inscription is carved in runes from the younger Futhark, they are long and slender in appearance.
The runic inscription has been translated to mean: "King Olav shot between these stones."

There has been a lot of speculations about who this king Olav was and where the other stone mentioned in the text is? Were they placed side by side or were the other stone placed where the arrow fell down?

The stone has been dated back to around 1000-1100AD, it could maybe be either Olav Kyrre (king between 1066-1093), Olav Tryggvasson (king 995-1000) or even St.Olav Haraldsson (king 1015-1030), but it could also be a local king that is not mentioned in the sagas.
It could even have been a standing stone from an earlier age, and the arrow shot could be a ritual to "chase away" the paganism.

The site has a beautiful view over the town Sogndal and the Sognefjord. The stone has been moved several times, but today it has been placed on its original spot.

The stone can be found at the end of the church's parking area.

Good it is cared for, but indeed such shelters often look quite intrusive. A polarizing filter usually helps to get rid of reflections or at least minimize them.
