Passage Grave near Annen in Drenthe

(Site description submitted by Martin_L , October 2009)

D IX Noordlo at Annen. Remains of a 4 capstone passage grave. The chamber is orientated West-East. The lateral passage was situated at the centre of chambers' southern long side.
The eastern chamber part and the passage are robbed while the 5 orthostats and the 2 capstones of the western chamber part are preserved in situ.
As at several other sites in the Netherlands low concrete blocks were used to mark the positions of the missing orthostats. Capstone C2 (counting from the West) was moved of its orthostats when Prof. van Giffen examined the site in the early 20th century, but this later was restored.

D9 is a small hunebed right on the main drag north out of the village of Noordlo. Its very cute and is situated within the urban landscape opposite a bus shelter in its own plot between two houses.

In the local town Annen in Holland, the burial mound D9 is finally saved. After years of pollution and neglect the mound is now safe from further harm.

In the past the burial mound was often used for bikes to lean against and the ground was polluted. After a lot of communication between citizens and the local government and a lot of letters from dutch residents and also people from other country’s (especially OR members) the local government was finaly convinced of the importance and has promised to put a good fence around the site, install a trashcan and make sure that every month a cleaning crew comes around to clean up the area.

Although a long road is still ahead, this is already a nice victory.
