Col du Petit Saint-Bernard Cromlech
Col du Petit Saint-Bernard Cromlech submitted by thecaptain : There is a 75m diameter Cromlech which sits at the top of the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard. This col is historically a very important route through the Alps, nowadays between France and Italy, and across which Hannibal took his elephants with which to raid Rome. The cromlech obviously cannot be seen in this photograph, but it gives a good overall picture of its position. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Remains of a 72 metre diameter stone circle, at the top of the Petit Saint-Bernard Pass, right on the border between France and Italy.

Despite having the road go right through the middle of the circle, there are still 46 stones remaining standing.

Note: We deliberately have two pages for this site. This is the French version of the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard Cromlech site page, as it is partially sited in both countries.

I have cycled up the Petit Saint-Bernard a few times which is somewhat hard work. The last time at the top we (cycling group) sat in the middle of the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard Cromlech. One of the guys I was with said something about the circle of stones, knowing that I tended to get excited about these sorts of things but I largely ignored it as it looked like people had recently just arranged a few rocks in a circle. Little did I realise until I checked a few days later that it not a modern circle.

There site has a reasonable view of the summer solstice sunset:

https://www.standingstones.org/viewer.html?name=col-du-petit-saint-bernard-cromlech_&country=fr&year=3750&grid=None&res=Med&label=None&zoom=7&x=284.4922865013774&y=-16.775862068965516

Quite what they built the circle up there for I can barely fathom. It must have been a brutal ascent in the good olde days but a really fabulous location today. The cafe at the top is also very welcome. Overall, next time I'm there I'll take more interest.
